Day 6

Students will be shown a Voicethread that tells the story of the Middle East Oil crisis and the Persian Gulf War. This will be done through still pictures and both written and oral notes to go with each slide. The students will answer a set of questions that go along with each slide.
.

We will review the information discussed in the previous lessons about the effect of events in the Middle East have the economies and people there. Students will work in pairs to create a digital story using Voicethread.com. Students will chose one person, or group of people, to represent in this story.

Students will continue to work in pairs (teacher created) to each create their own Voicethread. The students will be given a rubric that contains the information that will be required in this lesson. The rubric will grade on organization, presentation, visual aids, text, and verbal presentation.

As a class we will watch each other’s Voicethreads. We will discuss the points of views of people involved in the conflict and determine how this could affect other people involved.

Ongoing assessment(s): The ongoing assessment for this lesson will be the creation of the Voicethread. The students will also be assessed on the discussion that is held on the last day of this lesson about how the different groups of people can affect each other.
Accommodations and extensions: ESOL or Special education students will be paired with higher level students. Gifted students will be asked to use only verbal comments and not type. They will also need to include video.

Backup plan: If a backup plan is needed, students will write scripts about their person and act out the presentation in class.
EVALUATE AND EXTEND
Lesson reflections and notes:
As a class we will discuss the connection between the different groups of people studied in this lesson. Example: How Iraqi citizens are affected by the actions of US Soliders.

Instructional objective(s):
The students will study the effects that oil has had on the Middle East and the countries that the Middle East trades with. They will create informational packets with their ideas on how the issues that arise with gas and petroleum can be solved.

Day 6

Students will be showed the class wiki. (each period will have their own, created by the teacher) We will discuss what a wiki is and what it can be used for. We will use the site www.commoncraft.com/video-**wikis**-**plain**-**english** as a introduction to wikis. Students will discuss what wikis can be used for and how they can best be used in
Social Studies class.

We will review the information discussed in the previous lesson about the effect of events in the Middle East on gas prices locally. Students will work in pairs and use the internet to research the different current events that are happening in areas such as Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Kuwait. They will need to find a current event and how it is currently affecting oil trade in the Middle East.

Students will work in pairs (teacher created) to each create their own page on the class wiki. This page will include the current event they studied the day before and how they think this issue could best be solved. Students must take into account the role that oil prices in the US play in the conflict or issue and how this could really affect life at home.

Students will review each other’s sites and leave comments about each one. These comments must be educational and relevant in content. As a class we will then review the entire wiki and discuss all the information found there.

Ongoing assessment(s): The ongoing assessment for this lesson will be the ongoing creation of independent wiki pages. The students will also be assessed on the comments they leave for their classmates, as they must be informational or educational in content.
Accommodations and extensions: ESOL or Special education students will be paired with higher level students. Gifted students will be asked to include charts or visuals to support their solutions to the issues they are studying.

Backup plan: If a backup plan is needed, students will create posters with the same content using newspapers instead of the internet.

EVALUATE AND EXTEND
Lesson reflections and notes:
As a class we will discuss the students feelings towards working on a wiki. What did they like? What did they feel was a challenge? If given the option, would they choose to work on a wiki again?

Week 5

Grade Level-Seventh
Subject Area- Social Studies
GOALS-Lesson Description- Students will be studying the effects that issues in the Middle East have on gas prices in the US. We will study the wars, conflicts and environmental factors that affect oil production, there for affecting gas prices.
Standards-
SS7G6-The student will discuss environmental issues across Southwest Asia.
SS7G7-The student will explain the impact of location, climate, physical characteristics, distribution of natural resources, and population distribution on Southwest Asia.

a. Explain how the distribution of oil has affected the development of Southwest Asia.

Lesson (ACTION)-
The problem that students will study in this lesson is “Why do oil prices rise and fall?” The students will be planning a vacation and need to figure out how much gas they need to get to where they are going. The students will follow the ups and downs of the gas prices and we will discuss why the prices change over time. The way that this is relevant to my students is that in order to keep a normal daily life, gas must be available and affordable. Many students are unable to go on vacations or long trips due to the higher price of gasoline.
Day 1-We will then watch a movie called, “Fires of Kuwait” which shows the oil field fires in Kuwait, which were set by Saddam Hussein in order to prevent the use of this oil. Students will take notes on why the fires were started, who the fires were started by, and the means Kuwait and other countries had to go to in order to stop these fires.
Day 2-The students will first create a line graph showing the change in gas prices between 2000 and 2009. This graph will show the gradual (and sometimes not gradual) change in gas prices in the local area. Students can use the website
www.gasbuddy.com to find the prices.
Day 3- The students will plan out their road trip. They will map their journey from one side of the United States to the other. They will also figure out how much gas will be needed to make that trip and how much, at current prices, that gas would cost them. Students will look at current events in the Middle East to try to find a connection between the cost of gas and the events ongoing in the area. They can use the website
www.cnn.com to find these events.
Days 4-8-Students will spend some time in each class period (about 15 minutes) looking at gas prices and figuring out how much their trip cost will have changed. We will discuss why these prices have gone up or down and make a connection between this and the events in the Middle East.
Day 9- Students will go to the computer lab and create a Voicethread presentation. Not only will this focus on the actual trip the students planned, but also on the variation of gas prices and why they have changed over time. Several slides will discuss the events in the Middle East and what effect they had on the gas prices during their trip.

MONITOR-Accomodations and Modications-Students with special needs will be partnered with higher level learners for this lesson. They will work together with the information. ESOL and Special education students can be given extended time or modified graphing assignments if needed.
EVALUATE-Ongoing Assessments- Since this lesson takes almost two weeks (not continuous or daily) the students will be assessed each day we work on it. These assessments can be informal and just be simple questions the teacher asks or can be more formal like the Voicethread presentation at the end of the lesson. Students will be encouraged to talk to their parents and relatives about gas prices and how they think the rising and falling of them effects life in the US.
